Rosalind Johansson
Rosalind Johansson grew up in the UK but has deep roots in Scandinavia. She pursued her creative education at Sweden’s Craft Association College, Sätergläntan at Insjön in Sweden, and at Birmingham School of Art in UK. Graduating as a teacher in UK, she later studied International Politics at the Oslo University.
She worked as a volunteer (fredskorpsdeltagare) with Norway’s international development program in Botswana running a workshop teaching sewing and weaving skills to vulnerable women. Later in Tanzania, she ran a similar workshop for women with disabled children.
In 2015, she travelled to Peru to study textiles there and met the well-known Peruvian tapestry Weaver Maximo Laura, with whom she studied. This led to a collaboration and ultimately a book. “ Quilt, inspired by Maximo Laura”, which was published in October 2023.
Although she enjoys wet felting and low-tech fabric printing, her main focus the last 10 years has been art quilts such as those based on Maximo Laura’s tapestry designs and those inspired by the places she has lived. (Scandinavia, Botswana, Tanzania and Peru).
She is now based in the Orkney Islands, north of Scotland, where she makes quilted wallhangings inspired by the beautiful landscapes and abundant wildlife around her.
