Reena Curphey
Inspired by the rich textures and surfaces found in nature I combine these visions with natural materials and local sources of fibre. I have my flock of heritage breed fibre animals, whose fibre I use in my artworks.
As I live and work in the countryside, I am influenced by the variety of textures, colours, forms and seasons around me. This is the best place to be connected and inspired by nature. My aim is never to copy nature, but to feel the presence of the surroundings and seasons, where we live. Living a rural life and working with traditional techniques supports my artistic vision of creating more sustainable textile art.
Through my creations, I seek to raise awareness about the importance of biodiversity, sustainability, and the cultural richness embedded in our heritage. While valuing traditional skills and techniques, I aim to create wall hangings suitable for contemporary interiors, where tranquillity, harmony and connection to nature plays a vital role.
As for felting I use “homegrown” fibre, my woven tapestries are made of leftover materials from different textile industries.
Creating more sustainable art allows me to draw attention to our commitment to ecological and social responsibilities as an artist and human beings.
